Marina McDonough was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. She graduated from St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications, where she was trained as an engineer, specializing in satellite communication. From 1993 to 2000, she worked as a real estate manager, eventually teaming up with a co-worker to open their own real estate agency.
She immigrated to New York City, USA, in 2000.
Marina studied English at Kingsborough Community College, Brooklyn, NY. 
Since 2008, Marina has been a member of the 4th Ave Brooklyn Russian Language Meet-up Group, which brings together people who are interested in Russian language and literature. The 4th Ave Brooklyn Russian Language Meet-up Group is a place where people of different backgrounds and levels of expertise in Russian language can meet new friends and share their interests. Since 2011, she has been the group’s main organizer. She has participated in 170 events and, as organizer, she has created and provided 88 events. All events  explore the culture and character of Russia through concerts, culinary classes, museums, galleries, walking trip various locations around Manhattan and Brooklyn, BBQs in the park, discussions in their own Russian Club, Russian literary and film events, and theatrical performances, etc.
Marina McDonough has participated as a member of the jury at the Russian Language Olympiad, which is held yearly at Kingsborough Community College, Brooklyn, NY. 
Since 2015, Marina has been a member of the Pushkin Society of America. Her role is as coordinator  between the Pushkin Society and various other Russian groups and organizations.
She currently lives in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY.
