The American Theatre of Actors presents The Mozart Plays, two short dramas by Alexander Pushkin.
Both of Pushkin’s plays deal with the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Pushkin wrote these works in 1830, along with two other plays, which, together, are called The Little Tragedies. Scholars debate whether Pushkin intended these short plays to be performed, but they seem similar to other 19th century drawing room dramas–short plays intended to be performed by amateurs in their houses, often for holiday guests.
The first play, “Mozart and Salieri,” is Pushkin’s dramatization of the legend that Antonio Salieri poisoned Mozart. While they were rivals for certain work in Vienna, they were actually on friendly terms, and Salieri was the music teacher of Mozart’s son. Pushkin wrote his play only five years after Salieri’s death, and it was the inspiration for the later play Amadeus by Peter Schaffer.
The second play, “The Stone Guest,” is Pushkin’s retelling of the story of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Pushkin changes several of the details, notably having Don Juan kill Dona Anna’s husband, rather than her father.
The performances take place on August 12, 13, 14, and 15 (Wednesday through Saturday) at 8 PM and on Sunday, August 16th at 3 PM. Tickets are $20 and may be reserved by calling (212) 581-3044 or may be purchased at the American Theater of Actors Box Office, which opens a half hour before the performances.
